Ethnologue. Sa thèse de doctorat (Paris X-Nanterre) a mis en évidence les structures politiques d’une population indo-népalaise du Népal Central à partir de matériaux portant sur l’histoire, la filiation, le rituel et la politique de village.
Il a ensuite entrepris une anthropologie des représentations maoïstes népalaises, analysant notamment les productions symboliques concernant les martyrs et l’édification nationale.
Il s’est attaché à décrire la complexité culturelle Nord-Est indien (Assam et Meghalaya), à partir des articulations entre parenté et ethnicité.
Il étudie actuellement l’évolution des pratiques alimentaires en Asie du Sud.
